Colt draws attention to Derby prospects
20 Feb 2016What’s The Story was one of the big movers in the New Zealand Derby market at Ellerslie this afternoon.
The Savabeel colt turned in an impressive trial when he overcame the odds to beat the older horses over 2100 metres.
What’s The Story was stepping up to a middle distance for the first time and he couldn’t have been more impressive.
He lost several lengths 600 metres from home in a melee, but picked himself up to come with a sustained winning run.
“He lost quite a bit of ground so to get up was a massive performance,” trainer Stephen McKee said.
“I’ve got a lot of confidence in the horse and he’s put his hand up as a Derby type.
“He’s fit so I’ll just keep him ticking over – we’ve come in through the back door so we’ll see how we go.”
His odds were slashed from $51 to $18 following his latest performance.
Bred by Fairdale Stud with Goodwood Stud, What’s The Story was an $80,000 Karaka yearling.
Purchased by Go Racing Ltd, he is out of Tall Story who is a sister to the multiple Group One winner Tall Poppy.
All five of Tall Story’s foal to race have been winners and also includes the Australian Group performer Base.
