Pentathlon just a nose short in cup
23 Jan 2016Palmerston North nursery Goodwood Stud went within a cigarette paper of a perfect day at Trentham this afternoon.
They started the day off well with graduate Jonquil landing the opening race and were later oh so close to claiming the feature distance event.
Pentire’s gallant son Pentathlon looked the winner of the Gr 2 Wellington Cup only to be nosed out in a bobbing finish.
“I still thought he’d won, but it wasn’t to be,” trainer John Wheeler said. “It was still a great run and he’s only a four-year-old.”
Pentathlon has made a rapid rise through the grades this preparation with four wins to his credit.
He was purchased by Wheeler out of Goodwood’s 2013 Select Sale draft at Karaka for $85,000.
