Simply The Best Back In Business
07 Oct 2012

Simply The Best completed his successful comeback from injury with victory in last night’s feature event at Kranji.

The Goodwood Stud graduate won his sixth race from 16 starts when he claimed the Luzerne Cup over 1200 metres.

Simply The Best proved a bit of a handful for rider Jaoa Moreira behind the gates and almost dislodged the rider in his attempt to get him into the barriers.

However, the five-year-old son of Stratum was quickly down to the serious business and left the gates smartly.

Having just his second start after, an operation to remove bone chips from a knee, Simply The Best kicked strongly in the straight to make his return to the winners’ circle.

“I have to give a big thank you to the doctors here at the Turf Club, especially Dr Curry (Keoughan) for getting this horse back,” said trainer Desmond Koh.

“He had three months rest before we worked on him for three months to get him back after having the bone chips removed.

“He’s a horse with very special characteristics and a lot of work at the barriers was put into him to get him right, but he’s a horse also with a lot of ability.”

Moreira, who teamed with Koh to win the Emirates Singapore Derby with Chase Me in July, said it was a pleasure to ride another feature race winner for Koh.

“Desmond is a good young trainer who has a good team and prepares them very well,” Moreira said.

“This horse has a bit of a mind of his own, but he’s also a horse with a lot of talent.

“He spun around at the start, so we just worked on him and ran him into the barriers.

“There were a few around him that wanted to play up, but he was standing there fairly quiet.

“He was one of the first to jump from the barriers and he was doing it fairly easily outside of the leader which was also one of the favourite runners.

“With his lighter weight I was always confident that he had that horse beaten and between the 400m and the 300m he gave me a really strong kick and held his form all the way to the line.

“I have to thank the owners (Paiza Stable) for giving me the opportunity on this horse.”

Simply The Best is out of the End Sweep mare Career Start and from the family of the Gr.1 Oakleigh Plate winner Eagle Falls.
